HOW TO GET A BEAUTIFUL COAT
Are you adopting a dog or welcoming a young puppy? After bringing your furry friend home, you may have many questions about their care, especially when and how to bathe your dog.
A healthy and well-groomed coat is essential for your dog’s well-being. Generally, a beautiful coat reflects the overall health of the dog. Have you ever met dogs that seemed sick or uncomfortable? Probably because their owners overlooked these simple but important steps for their dog’s health.
A dog with a beautiful coat is often more confident and walks with their head held high!
In this article, I will try to answer all your most relevant questions and provide you with tips by guiding you through common practices to ensure your dog has a magnificent coat and “looks as handsome as a truck.”
Brushing Your Dog:
To start, and this should be a regular and bonding gesture with your dog, you should brush them and not just pet them.
Brushing helps prevent matting, promotes hair growth, and also allows you to find ticks that you should immediately remove with tweezers.
Depending on the breed of the dog, the frequency of brushing may vary.
Weekly brushing is ideal for short-haired breeds like the Jack Russell, Boxer, Dalmatian, American Staffordshire Terrier, French Bulldog (like Maya in the photo), Boston Terrier, short-haired Dachshund, Beagle, Basset Hound, Weimaraner, and others.
And if you find it difficult to keep your dog still while brushing, you can give them a Dingo dog toy, a fun and colorful toy like Gasp, Roxy, or Morty. Your dog, occupied with playing, will be easier to brush.
Daily brushing is recommended for dogs with long or medium-length fur, such as the Akita, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Brittany Spaniel, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Patou, Saint Bernard, Siberian Husky, or my Texas in the photo, and many others.
You should have a brush suitable for your dog’s fur.
Rubber brushes generally work well for short and curly hair, while metal brushes are effective for untangling long and medium-length hair.
If your dog doesn’t want to stay still while brushing, give them a natural wooden chew bone to keep them busy, which makes it easier to brush them.
REGULARLY CHECKING YOUR DOG’S COAT:
It is important to regularly check your dog’s coat.
This allows you to detect skin problems or the presence of parasites. A dull, sparse coat with bald patches, a particular odor can alert you to a possible health problem.
In this case, it is important to consult a specialist who will inform you of the necessary steps.
USING NATURAL PRODUCTS FOR YOUR DOG’S HYGIENE:
When grooming or bathing, it is important to use natural products, and if possible, organic. They must be suitable for your dog’s skin and coat.
There are liquid shampoos and solid shampoos.
Selection of dog shampoos I have selected a whole range of soaps for your dog from the Biovétol brand:
Solid shampoos for dogs:
The solid All Coats soap: For all dogs and all types of coats.
The solid Anti-Scratch Soap: Perfect for dogs with sensitive and atopic skin.
The solid Anti-Odor Soap: Suitable for dogs that do not smell good or have rolled in a smelly place during the walk.
Liquid shampoos for dogs and puppies:
The All Coat Shampoo: As the name suggests, it is suitable for all types of dog coats.
The Anti-Scratch Shampoo: Recommended for dogs with skin problems such as atopic dermatitis or eczema (with the approval of the veterinarian).
The Anti-Odor Shampoo: Ideal liquid soap for dogs that smell strongly or have rolled in feces (like my big Texas).
The Anti-Insect Shampoo: Soap with repellent effect against fleas, lice, ticks, mites, sandflies, and mosquitoes.
The Special Junior Shampoo: Ideal for puppies from 3 months old.
HOW TO BRUSH A SHORT- OR CURLY-HAIRED DOG?
With this type of dog, it is best to use a rubber brush or a soft brush with natural bristles. Gently brush your dog in the direction of the hair. Focus on areas where hair loss is most pronounced, which you will learn over time when you have just welcomed your pet. Don’t forget the areas on the legs and belly.
HOW TO BRUSH A LONG- OR MEDIUM-HAIRED DOG?
Starting with a metal brush with rounded tips, gently and carefully untangle any knots. Then brush always in the direction of the hair. Brush your entire dog, including sensitive areas like the belly and legs.
Finally, take an appropriate comb, thin, and run it through to remove dead hair and give your dog’s coat a neat and shiny appearance.
In spring, when your dog sheds its coat, much to the delight of your vacuum cleaner! It is best to brush your dog every day or at least twice a week.
If your dog really looks like a sheep before shearing, I strongly recommend calling a professional at a dog salon. This avoids a painful session for you and your four-legged companion.
TIP FOR A SHINY COAT:
Here are some additional tips to maintain your dog’s magnificent coat:
Gently massage your dog’s coat with a dollop of CBD skin and coat care oil. You can use this massage to also apply it to their paws to strengthen them!
Give them a warm bath with the All Coats shampoo from Biovétol. Its composition is completely natural, and its scent will relax your dog while respecting their coat.
Remember to give them supplements, such as salmon oil, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and above all, give them a healthy and balanced diet.
Don’t forget to treat your dog or cat against parasites. There are external parasites like fleas and ticks, against which you should apply anti-parasitic pipettes; they come in different forms: cat and kitten insect protection pipettes, puppy pipettes, medium-sized dog insect protection pipettes, and large dog pipettes.
Likewise, there are internal parasites, worms, which you can limit with a natural and safe dietary supplement for your dog or cat. I recommend 4 products: AltVers for small cats, for large cats, but also a worm-fighting dietary supplement for small dogs and puppies or large dogs.
A HEALTHY AND BALANCED DIET FOR YOUR DOG’S BEAUTIFUL COAT:
Diet has a direct impact on your dog’s health and coat. A healthy and balanced diet tailored to your dog’s needs contributes to the quality, beauty, and shine of their coat.
It is important to check the contents of their bowl by offering them kibble that is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are beneficial for their coat and skin. These are the components you find in fish oil.
You should also ensure that their diet contains sufficient vitamins and minerals.
A beautiful and well-groomed coat not only shows that your dog looks good but also that they feel good. With the right tools, products, and grooming habits, you can ensure that your dog proudly walks with a shiny coat and full of confidence. Remember to brush regularly, use natural products, and keep an eye on your dog’s diet. Through proper care, you not only contribute to the beauty of your dog’s coat but also to their health and quality of life.
